The Odyssey of a Disillusioned Child by Giselle van Rheede

January10

book

Synopsis

Embark on the journey of the disillusioned child, Melyrina, from childhood to adulthood. Trace her footsteps through her poetry as she unmasks the emotional hurt and psychological anguish she has endured throughout her childhood years. Her insecurities stem from her yearning to find a sense of self worth and a purpose in life as she constantly fights against an embedded and almost tangible sense of rejection and abandonment she experienced as a child.

She searches for love to replace what she lost, and through this pursuit she struggles to find her own identity. She rebels against societies demands to conform to a specific race or religion. As she is educated in a multi-cultural and multi-faith society she grows to feel a strong affiliation to a race and culture that is not inherently hers. This not only brings further confusion and ostracism but reinforces her nihilistic nature and her cynicism of the world.

The story of Melyrina will resonate with any child, teenager or adult who has felt the loss of a parent, be it through death or divorce, or who has struggled with finding a sense of their own identity, anyone who has felt trapped or disillusioned with the hypocrisy of the society we live in, or anyone who has verged on the edge of the melancholic black hole.

As you read the words which candidly admit to feelings of depression and suicidal tendencies, you will gain insight to the truth hidden behind many faces in the world today.

She has dared to put the words on paper in childlike innocence, unearthing feelings which some may still consider taboo and yet they will echo in the hearts of children, teenagers and adults around the world today.
